Uncertain in the City – Keynote Presentation by Professor Jeff Ferrell (USA)

Urbanists have long celebrated the city’s sacred uncertainty; dense with the indeterminacy of unexpected encounters, indecipherable signals, and unknown pathways, the city offers a shifting mélange of memories and emotions. Today this uncertainty suffers under regimes of urban planning, spatial surveillance, and risk management – and yet, at its best, urban art defends the city’s radical indeterminacy against those who would resolve it. In their everyday practice, urban wall art and graffiti confound categories of action and art, visibility and invisibility, legality and illegality, offering up an engaging aesthetics of confusion.
